Hundreds of Guatemalans gathered outside the country's main government building on Saturday (August 15th) to denounce the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The demonstrators alleged corruption among authorities and said the health system had collapsed.

They called on President Alejandro Giammmattei and other senior officials to resign.

Guatemalan citizens hold a protest against the government, while practicing safety measures due to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic emergency. Hundreds of protesters gather in front of the National Palace, the government’s main administration building, where the offices of the President, Vice-President and several ministries are located, to protest against alleged corruption that is rampant and out of control, poor handling of the pandemic by local authorities, a collapsed health system that has every hospital in the country overrun, and an inability by President Alejandro Giammattei to be a proper Head-of-State. The protesters practice safety measures against COVID-19 such as wearing a mask and keeping their social distance. The protest organizers announced that this will be the first of many protest to come, as they demand the resignation of President Giammattei and the other presidents of the Legislative (Congress) and Supreme Court of Justice, the other branches of the government.
