On Monday (August 15, 2022) the last French troops involved in the Barkhane operation in Mali left the country. France started withdrawing soldiers from the mission, which entailed the fight against jihadist insurgents, following the rise to power of the military junta in August 2020. France announced the withdrawal of its troops in February 2022, after its relations with the junta deteriorated.

This clip shows hundreds of Malians taking to the streets of the capital Bamako on September 22, 2020, calling for French troops to leave the country. The protesters carried signs reading: "Death to France and its allies."
