A finance chief from President Trump's 2020 election campaign has given his opinion on the leader's Covid-19 diagnosis.

Michael B Alfaro, head of the Illinois 'Trump Victory Finance Committee', said he ''got on his hands and knees and prayed'' when the commander-in-chief's sickness was revealed.

He slammed the 'hateful' reaction of the left - particularly on social media - and blamed the Joe Biden campaign's 'rhetoric' for previously creating animosity and 'hateful messages' towards the president.

The Republican official condemned China for 'releasing the virus on our shores' and repeated Trump's claim that Biden had been close to China.

Becoming emotional, Alfaro praised the Trump administration's responses to the pandemic by providing financial assistance.

The fundraiser, who has met the Trump family on a number of occasions, said ''you can't even get near them without at least a temperature check'' and added that the President takes the pandemic ''very seriously''.

He said: ''President Trump's heart is in it for the right reasons, he's in it for you and I, so that we can have a safe and healthy America.

''To think that the liberal left, even at times like this when Trump is getting healthy, and he's still working round the clock, still working 24 hours a day, you would think they would lighten up and take a step back, but no, they want to double down and triple down on these hateful, hateful messages towards him and his family.''
