A driver was rescued after his truck swerved off-road and broke open a water pipe before falling into the Qiantang River in eastern China.

The CCTV video, shot in the city of Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province on October 3, shows a truck smashing into a water pipe on the side of a road, causing water to shoot out more than five metres in the air.

The truck then fell into the entrance of the Qiantang River.

The deputy director of the local police station was then seen jumping into the river with a lifebuoy to rescue the truck driver.

After the firefighters arrived, they used a fishing boat to bring the truck driver back to the shore.

The truck driver was conscious and did not have serious trauma. He was sent to hospital for treatment.

The video was provided by local media with permission.
