This is the horrifying moment a 200-kilogram black bear mauled a trainer during a circus show in central China's Puyang on October 2.

The shocking video, provided by local media with permission, shows a black bear knocking a trainer named Li Jun to the ground and biting his clothes, while other members of staff use sticks to hit the bear repeatedly to try to get it off Li.

According to reports, a member of the audience allegedly threw a piece of ham onto the stage, but Li picked it up and did not allow the black bear to eat it. The bear then got angry and attacked Li.

Li Jun only suffered scratches to his arm as he said: "The performance animals have no teeth. We have been filing down their teeth since they were young as we are afraid of accidents.”

Li and the bear had have been performing together for several years and only had an incident once.

Li said: "I hope the audiences do not throw any treats when watching the performance because you do not know the animals' temper."

The circus has been suspended, the black bear was sent back to Wuxi City and the trainer Li Jun had vaccination already.
