World's best big wave surfers take on "record-breaking" waves at Nazaré
Spectacular footage shows the world's best big wave surfers taking on potentially record-breaking waves at Nazaré in Portugal on Thursday (October 29th).
The monster swell was generated by Hurricane Epsilon in the North Atlantic and produced some of the biggest waves ever seen with some reaching 75 feet.
The litany of big-name surfers at the event included Kai Lenny, Lucas Chumbo, Sebastian Steudtner, Garrett McNamara, Nic Von Rupp, Andrew Cotton, Justine Dupont and Maya Gabeira.
Despite the COVID-9 Pandemic, thousands of people came to the cliffs of Praia do Norte beach near the lighthouse to watch what was one of the most impressive days of big wave surfing seen in years.
Among some of the numerous memorable rides, Lucas Chumbo and Sebastian Steudtner rode some of the biggest waves of the day (00:12-00:25 and 00:50-01:04), increasing speculation about a possible new world record, something that is only decided at the end of the big wave season.
“We were all monitoring this swell for weeks as Hurricane Epsilon was developing in the North Atlantic," filmer Pedro Miranda told Newsflare.
"It's difficult to call which was the biggest wave ridden, I'd say it was Lucas or Sebastian, both among the biggest waves I've ever captured in Nazaré, won't call it a world record as I don't like to speculate," Miranda said.
Praia do Norte beach, near the fishing village of Nazaré, has become famous worldwide for huge waves in 2011, when Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara set a world record for the largest wave ever surfed at 78-foot at the time.
In 2017 that record was broken by Brazilian surfer Rodrigo Koxa, setting the bar at 80-foot.
