An elephant was seen rubbing its body against the bark of a tree in an attempt to relieve its itch.

Footage captured on October 26 in Kalawewa National Park shows the 11-foot-tall animal rubbing various parts of its body against the tree.

An elephant was captured rubbing its body against the bark of a tree to relieve its itching in a national park of Sri Lanka on October 26. The sight was spotted in Kalawewa National Park at Anuradhapura.

A video shows the 11-foot-tall jumbo rubbing its abdominal area against the tree bark before stroking its nogging against the surface. It tries to cover almost every hard-to-reach area, massaging them by grazing against the tree.

The massage session can be seen continues for quite some time, with one spectacular moment of the elephant raising its hind leg to rub it. It also rubs its posterior against the huge bark to ward off insects and flies.

Elephants are equivalent to great apes, such as chimpanzees and orangutans in terms of cognitive ability for tool use and manufacture. Other species such as crows and other birds, dolphins, monkeys and octopus also have been known to use tools to solve complex situations.
