India, Bangladesh restore rail link severed during 1965 war with fanfare

A goods train crossed Bangladesh-India border on December 17 with great fanfare restoring a rail link after 55 years.

The rail link was snapped off during a war between India and Pakistan in 1965. Bangladesh, which was part of Pakistan, seceded from the country in 1971, but the rail link remained closed.

The restored rail link connects Haldibari in India with Chilahati in Bangladesh. It covers 3.5 km in India and the rest in Bangladesh bosting people to people contact and trade.

It was flagged off by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina.
