This was the highly distressing moment a lion at Xiangyang Zoo in Hubei Province was filmed biting its own leg due to an itchy wound.

In the video filmed by tourists, the lion is seen writhing on the enclosure floor with a bloody leg as it is heard making uncomfortable noises.

In response to the video, the zoo claimed the lion was acting in this manner because of a wound on the lion’s hind leg caused by wire scratching from the cage.

The lion's wellbeing has drawn criticism for the zoo with some saying it should be returned to the wild.

At present, the zoo has placed the injured lion in a treatment cage until it is completely healed.

The treatment cage is long and narrow, so the lion will not bite its leg anymore.

The video was filmed on December 27 and provided by local media.
