Radical Islamist linked to 2002 Bali bombings returns to hometown after prison release
This was the moment Abu Bakar Bashir returned to his hometown to much fanfare after his January 8 prison release.
Footage shows residents and press lining the streets of Surakarta in Central Java.
Bashir was suspected to be linked to the deadly Bali nightclub bombings in 2002, which took the lives of over 200 people, including 88 Australians.
Bashir was serving an unrelated sentence for his involvement in militant training camps in the area of Aceh.
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison described his release as "very distressing" for the families of the Australian victims.
