Thousands of people in gathered in Warsaw on Wednesday (January 27) after the Polish government announced that it will enforce a law which amounts to a near-total ban on abortion.

Once the law goes into effect, abortion will only be permitted in cases of rape, incest or when the mother’s life is in danger.

Poland's near-total ban on abortion went into effect late Wednesday night, despite rampant resistance from hundreds of thousands of Poles who began protesting in the fall.
The protesters have gathered in front of PiS (ruling party) headquarters on Nowogrodzka Street in Warsaw, and started chanting a phone number to "Aborcja bez graniic", a group that helps women to get abortion abroad. This number has also become a slogan in the recent protests.
