An Asian water monitor lizard devours a freshwater turtle it has found. The dead turtle has decomposed and would have been easily located by the monitor, which has an exceptional sense of smell. They hunt on land and water and also eat carrion. Found throughout Southeast Asia, this monitor (Varanus salvator) is the world's second largest lizard, after the Komodo dragon. It can weigh over 50 kg and reach over 2 metres in length.
In Thailand, the monitor is a protected species and is numerous, inhabiting parks and canals.
