As part of ongoing efforts by the municipality to improve the water quality of the city's canals, geese are being used to eat algae and other aquatic vegetation. The first ten birds have settled in at Chiang Mai Gate and have become an attraction many people stopping to have a gander (look). Fears that the geese themselves will cause pollution are unfounded as the canal contains a huge volume of water. City mayor Assani Buranupakorn also plans to introduce thousands of fish.
The birds are housed in a straw hut in the evening by rangers. If the project is successful, more geese will be deployed.
Other action is underway to increase oxygen levels using pumps.
