Yekaterinburg residents express their opinion during a rally in support of Alexei Navalny
This footage was filmed and produced 21 April 2021.
Protest over the jailed opposition leader, Alexei Navalny, erupted across the nation, on April 21, in Yekaterinburg. Demonstrations were called to be held in more than 100 cities. The biggest ones were expected to be in Moscow and St Petersburg.
This video captures the views of the protest participants regarding the current situation of Alexei Navalny and Russia as a whole.
The translation is given below:
[0:23-1:17]
– Tell me, why did you come out to protest today? How do you feel about what is happening now?
– I went out to make my point. I believe that Alexei Navalny should be released. Doctors should also be allowed to see him. In general, I believe that there is no legal reason to keep him in prison. His case record was falsified. I came out today to convey my position.
– Aren't you afraid of being arrested?
– Yes, I'm a little bit afraid.
– And how do you feel right now?
– I'm excited and nervous.
– Maybe you already have the numbers of the lawyers, just in case?
– Yes, I have some. - What's your name? - Alexey. - And your last name?
– Davidov.
– Thank you very much.
[1:29-2:29]
– How do you feel about what is happening with Alexei Navalny?
– The authorities are not showing themselves very positively, and this applies not only to the case of Alexei Navalny. We don't like it. Why does the government keep some things secret? Obviously, there's nothing there.
– Do you think that the protests can help Navalny?
– I don't know to be honest.
– It's not just about Navalny, but about everything that happens in the government. We came here not for the sake of Navalny, but because we, as citizens, are not satisfied with the current laws.
– Which ones exactly?
– First of all, the law on the retirement age, we are not satisfied with the size of pensions, we do not believe that officials deserve such high salaries. And in general, the United Russia party has been in power for too long.
[4:19-4:42]
(Police officer) – do not interfere.
(People shout) – Provide your documents! Shame on you! Let her go!
[4:45-5:24]
– We were just walking with the posters. It's not a crime. I asked the policeman to show the documents and list the reasons for the arrest. In response, I only heard "You are interfering with the work of the police."
– And you were walking next to the girl who was detained?
– Yes, I ran after her when she was detained. Her phone fell out, but they took her away anyway. There must be grounds for arrest. They have no right to detain people just like that. This is an illegal detention. Picketing is legally permitted. The girl was also wearing a medical mask, it just fell off during the detention.
– So the detained didn't shout anything?
– No, they just walked with posters in their hands. Here goes the brave police. If you let me, I will go further.
