Shortly after 130pm a working fire was dispatched for the 200 block of south poplar street in Mount Carmel. As units started to respond local police confirmed a working fire with the first arriving chief calling it well involved and asking for the next alarm. As crews arrived they were met with heavy fire out both the front and back of the second division with it rapidly spreading. Neighbor James Haynes was one of the first on scene as he was driving by and to call 911. While units were being dispatched he worked to make sure all the neighbors knew about the fire and were safely evacuated. Haynes when asked about his actions said he isn’t a hero but just did what he thought was right and hoped anyone else would have acted the same way if they would have seen it and had the chance to make sure everyone was safe before responders arrived. Home from 325 to 241 suffered heavy fire damage during the attempt to contain the blaze. Crews were on scene for about 3 hours and came from throughout Northumberland and Schuylkill counties to battle the blaze while Montour county sent their rehab unit to assist.
