Temperatures soar as heatwave scorches Greece for days
A heatwave has impacted people all across the world, high temperatures continue to prevail in Greece for consecutive days. The sweltering heat has made scientists increasingly concerned, as they see this as a manifestation of the irreparable damage humans have caused to the planet due to climate change. Soaring temperatures across the planet and parts of the Mediterranean and central Europe are set to experience intensely high summer temperatures in the coming weeks, putting them at high risk from wildfires.
The temperature of the Aegean Sea has risen to 28C (around 82 F) — which is four degrees higher than normal for this time of year — due to the extended heatwave that hit Greece last week and still continues. The Athens National Observatory says that satellite reports indicate that the rise in sea temperatures is also due to unusually mild winds.
The footage from July 9 in Thessaloniki shows people facing the heatwave in a densely populated city while others flock to the nearest beaches.
