Adorable baby chimpanzee given new chance at life after being kidnapped and beaten by poachers who killed his mother
An adorable baby chimpanzee who was kidnapped by violent poachers has been given a new chance at life.
Matiaba was abducted from his home in the Angolan rainforest after poachers killed his mother.
Luckily, soon after, he was discovered by rescuers from the animal charity NGO Wild@Life, who immediately seized him and transported the chimpanzee to their sanctuary.
Matiaba had been severely beaten, with deep wounds on his neck and head.
He also had a high temperature and was rushed in for intensive veterinary care.
While he is still extremely fragile and slowly being nursed back to health, the chimpanzee's confidence has also started coming back.
He is now thriving, living with other rescued chimps at the charity's sanctuary in Angola, Africa.
Matiaba has even learned how to climb trees and has made lots of new friends.
Adorable photos show the animal living his best life as he swings on trees, enjoys snuggles with his rescuers and plays with his very own chimpanzee teddy.
Wild@Life also managed to apprehend one of the poachers, who has been taken into custody and is set to be prosecuted.
Chimpanzees continue to be victims of the wildlife trade and wildlife trafficking.
For one infant chimpanzee to be abducted, up to 10 from the same family can be murdered.
Even after being rescued, many face a long process of rehabilitation.
"Poachers are decimating the population, killing all families to kidnap babies," said Asli Han Gedik, founder of the NGO.
"Some of these babies become social media influencers' pets.
"We need to put an end to the wildlife trafficking."
In honour of World Chimpanzee Day, Wild at Life is asking for donations to help save chimpanzees like Matiaba.
