Interview with a woman building houses in Buenos Aires, Argentina
This footage was filmed and produced 10 July 2021.
Since women are "automatically" relegated to cleaning tasks, a group of women in Argentina started doing masonry to break down gender roles. According to Argentina's construction workers union, the number of women in the industry increased by 131 percent from 2003 to 2010 and they now make up five percent of the workforce.
The video shows Argentine women building houses to break down gender stereotypes as well as some interviews with these powerful women.
Interview:
I came here because of gender violence. But I liked the idea of working in masonry. I suffered gender violence and was in need for a long time. I've always put myself by the side of those who suffer the same violence to help them get out. The group began helping women who were having the land but not the house. For me, the most important thing for a single woman and their kids is to have their own house.
I've been working here for a year and a half. We have already built 3 houses and the idea is to continue doing more.
When I started I worked with a crew and trained with them, now I'm with another group training women and when this finishes I will continue with another group helping them to learn the masonry skills. I knew masonry before coming here because my dad is a blacksmith. I had helped my family to build our own house. But here we all learn together. I was the team leader because I knew a little more than the others but here we are all equal. We were people without a job and we chose masonry to help our fellows with their needs. We never imagined that we would be able to construct a house from 0. Till today we can’t believe that! It is really difficult to listen to what men say. “Well done!” because it is difficult for them to recognize that we did something well (still happening today) but some people look at our work and say it is a good job. Because we try to do a better job every day.
We come here every day and talk to each other, we lend an ear to what fellows want to say and give support to them. For my father this isn’t new. I've been learning this since I was a child but my husband says ‘Why aren’t you doing a women’s job’ and I say ‘This is my job and this is what I want to do’. We take this job seriously, always trying to do it in the best possible way. We don't come here to hang around. Just because we do it, being women, it won’t be badly finished. We always try to do our best. The idea is that the group keeps on growing. Right now there are 3 crews.
