Devotees in northern India celebrate Naga Panchami, a day dedicated to snakes, by wrapping venomous serpents around their necks.

Residents in Samastipur, Bihar, are seen with snakes wrapped around their hands, arms and necks as they celebrate the festival.

Once the festival is over, the snakes are then released back into the wild.

Locals claim that no one has been bitten by a snake during the festival that dates back 300 years.

In Samastipur district of Bihar, such a fair is held on Nagpanchami, seeing that the common people get goosebumps. This is a fair of snakes. Snakes are also so poisonous that even a drop of their venom can kill anyone. Local people claim that Bhagat removes venom from venomous snakes through tantra-mantra.

After worshiping these snakes are again released into the forest. There are snakes in the hands from child to old.

This unique fair is held on the day of Nagpanchami at Sindhiya Ghat, about 23 km from Samastipur. Whether children, old people, everyone has snakes in their hands, around their necks.

In the fair, someone will be seen feeding snakes and some will be seen playing with snakes. After some time these snakes are released after drinking milk and asking for a vow.

This fair of Sindhiya Ghat has been going on continuously for more than three hundred years. The practice of catching snakes on the day of Nagpanchami has been going on for many generations.

It is believed that years ago, Rishi used to worship Kush by making a snake. But now people worship by holding real snakes.

Local people claim that till date no one has been bitten by snake in this fair which has been going on for years.

The priests sing hymns while playing the mridang. People keep swinging with snakes around their necks and in their hands.
