New York City police officers have been praised for their recent handling of a situation in which a man was threatening to harm himself and others with a knife.

Footage filmed on 53rd and Madison in Manhattan shows police using a taser on the unidentified man with the weapon to end the tense encounter safely.

"A man with a knife was attempting to harm himself or others," the filmer, Jay Heydt said.

"The police waited for the right moment to taser and arrest him, saving all of us as a result," he added.

"The way these cops saved us this morning was highly commendable," he added.

The incident took place on July 26.

'Gripping footage emanating from Manhattan, NYC shows the police strategically assuming control over a wild situation.
