Minnesota Governor Tim Walz was forced to leave a political event early after a 'Water Protectors' protest group disrupted it on Saturday 4 September.

The governor was speaking at a Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL) event in Alexandria when a member of the audience shouted out, hoping to get the Governor to discuss the Line 3 pipeline situation.

Line 3 is a controversial oil pipeline being built to carry oil from Canada's tar sands region to Lake Superior's western tip.

Soon a number of others joined in, singing and chanting and urging the Governor to stop the construction of the Line 3 pipeline.

Mr Walz ultimately stopped his speech early and left the event in a hurry.

The protesters continued to occupy the event as rally attendees argued, shouted, and tore some of the group's banners.

The event ended early.

Alexandria, Minnesota -- On Saturday, September 4 Minnesota Governor Tim Walz traveled to the town of Alexandria for a DFL rally in Alexandria City Park. Soon after Gov. Walz was introduced and began speaking, a member of the audience shouted out hoping to get the Governor to discuss the Line 3 pipeline situation. Two other people presenting the audience soon followed suit before a larger number of people joined together in songs and chants urging the Governor to stop the construction of the Line 3 pipeline. The Governor ultimately stopped his speech early and fled the event, with his vehicle and follow security detail quickly fleeing the scene. Water protectors continued to occupy space as rally attendees argued, shouted, and tore some of the group's banners. The event ended early before water protectors marched back to their vehicles.
