A couple have gone viral on TikTok after sharing the impressive makeover they have given their house in just nine months – which will add an estimated £100,000 to the property value.

Rebecca and Fraser Brennan-Brown, 27 and 28, bought their Kent home in January 2021 for £375,000.

The house was “filthy” and “smoke-damaged” – and the couple bartered the asking price of £400,000 down after viewing the extent of the damage.

The 1970s house has four bedrooms and two reception rooms, with an added conservatory at the back.

While there was plenty of potential for a sprawling family home, the detached house required a complete renovation.

Sharing progress videos on TikTok (@our70shome), where they have nearly 200,000 followers, the couple were stunned when their clips went viral.

Their most popular post has been viewed more than six million times and racked up 500,000 likes – with the pair showing off the reality of living in a house while renovating it.

The video shows them deep cleaning every inch of the property, with the smoke damage from the wood burning stove clearly visible on the walls.

In the clip, dark liquid seeps from the walls as Rebecca scrubs them.

One person said: “I thought the walls were just releasing a dripping goo at first!”

“Hey ur walls are bleeding,” another user commented. [sic]

Someone else added: “This was so satisfying to watch.”

“The house was such a mess – it hadn’t been looked after very well so there were chunks of the floor missing, holes in the walls and general dirt everywhere,” Rebecca, a wedding planner, told Jam Press.

“One of the worst problems was smoke damage caused by an old wood burner that was used to heat the house, which has meant we’ve had to scrub all of the walls to get the soot off.

“The windows were so bad that when we moved in, we literally had to wear three jumpers and hold hot water bottles so as not to freeze.

“The carpets were filthy and the house was ultimately in need of some care and attention.”

The couple rose to the challenge, hiring tradespeople to give the home a complete overhaul.

They started with the upstairs bedrooms to make sure they had a place to relax and work, replastering the walls and adding new floors, before decorating.

They have also knocked down several walls to create larger rooms – as well as tearing down the conservatory in order to make a large family kitchen-diner.

Rebecca and Fraser have also dabbled with DIY themselves, doing all the painting, skirting boards, ripping up of flooring and knocking down of walls themselves.

Rebecca also re-grouted the bathroom for £60 – which she filmed for the pair's TikTok page, where she compared the difference between grout pens and grouting.

She said: “We have been doing as much DIY as we can but are keen to ensure the house is to a really good standard, so anything we’ve not felt comfortable doing we have got the experts in.”

So far, they have spent £25,000 – just under half of their budget – and have transformed their bedroom, two offices, the bathroom and a dressing room.

The rooms have undergone dramatic transformations, being updated with modern décor and their signature style.

The master bedroom has gone from a dated room with plain furnishings to a stunning sage green sanctuary, with hanging light fixtures and dark, wooden accents.

The couple are currently renovating downstairs, focusing on the lounge and kitchen.

Rebecca said: “We want to create somewhere we can see ourselves living for the next 10 years that we can enjoy as a couple with our friends, and potentially as a family.

“We want to create a house suited to us and reflecting our personalities and lifestyles.

“We’re now about halfway through and it feels like we’re living on a building site right now.

“We’re not sure but we expect the market value to have increased. Once the extension is finished, we hope to get the house revalued for around £475,000.”
