Japan's Kitakyushu city was light up with a magical display of some 30,000 lanterns for this year's bamboo light festival.

The dazzling display took place on Saturday (October 23) at and around Kokura Castle in the city in the southwest of Japan.

The candles have been made by volunteers to help an initiative towards more sustainability. The festival will continue until October 31.

The Bamboo Lamp Festival was held for the first time in November 2019 with about 16,000 bamboo lights being lit and many other decorations made from bamboo.
The festival is continued in 2020 with 25,000 bamboo lights being lit.
In 2021, the Festival is held from October 23 to 31 with 30,000 bamboo lights and other decorations.
Citizen volunteers made about 23,000 bamboo lanterns and some 7,000 bamboo paper lanterns for the third edition of the bamboo light festival, using bamboo in abandoned forests in the city to help Kitakyushu's "Sustainable Development Goals Future City" initiative. The volunteer members also light the candles in the lanterns during the event, which will continue until Oct. 31.
The lanterns are lit between 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., and admission is 500 yen (about $4.40) for people of junior high school age and older.
