Shusha. Karabakh region of the Republic of Azerbaijan
This footage was filmed and produced 7 November 2021.
This footage illustrates city shots of Shusha. It's is a city in the Nagorno-Karabakh region of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The city was founded in 1752 by the Karabakh khan Panahali Khan, and in the early days the city was called Panahabad together with Shusha in honor of the khan.
In 1905, 1920 and 1992 Shusha was completely burnt down three times. The first time it was burnt by both communities, the second time by the Azerbaijanis, and the third time by the Armenians. Despite the ethnic bias, mixed marriages existed between members of both communities. Trade and Russian domination were the threads that tied the two communities together. The first of these wires was natural and the second was artificial.
The city of Shusha was occupied by Armenian troops on May 8, 1992. As a result of the occupation of Shushi, 195 Azerbaijani citizens died, 165 were injured, 150 became disabled, 552 babies lost their parents, more than 20 thousand people left their homes and became internally displaced persons. The fate of 58 Azerbaijani captives and hostages is still unknown.
The city was released from the occupation by the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan on November 8, 2020.
