A man has built a luxurious home office under the stairs of his 1860's Victorian house.

Edward Kercher, 25, from Southampton, bought the two up-two down terrace house in January of this year.

The architectural technologist decided one of the best ways to make use of his under-stair storage space was to turn it into a functional space – a home office.

He filmed the process of creating the workspace on TikTok (@edshomereno), where it was viewed 1.3 million times and racked up 124,000 likes.

In the clip, he shows the plain storage cupboard with a standard size door to enter before ripping out the wall to open up the space.

He then cladded the area in wood to give a “rustic feel”, boxed in some plumbing, plastered it and then used an offcut of wood to create the desk.

Adding some décor and light furnishings, the space was complete as a fully functioning office.

One viewer commented: “I now want to rip out my understairs cupboard! Looks so good.”

“Looks amazing!!,” agreed another person.

Someone else said: “Looks mint mate, job well done.”

One viewer said: “Looks so pretty and modern ed! I love it.”

“Poor Harry Potter,” one person joked.

Another user quipped: “Torn between loving this and wondering where your hoover will live now.”

The process took the handyman two months.

Ed is pleased with the finished result, calling it one of the “most enjoyable” tasks of his house renovation.

"I started off by ripping out all of the under stairs storage stud wall and door, I then cladded under the stairs and the front of stairs in wood,” Edward told Jam Press.

"I had to box in some services that were running up to my boiler, I then plastered over the boxing-in.

"Next I got a hardwood off cut from my kitchen worktop, cut it in half and fixed it together to create the desk top, fixing it to the wall with metal brackets.

"I finally painted all the wood cladding with white paint, fixed the skirting boards to the wall, completed the herringbone flooring around it, and wired in the sockets for the cables."

Edward kept the DIY office reasonably inexpensive due to repurposing the hardwood worktop.

He said: "Now that working from home is becoming a lot more of a necessity, I think this is a strong selling point for my little house."

BUDGET BREAKDOWN:
Wood cladding - £60
Plastering and boxing in - £30
Hardwood off cut - Free
Metal brackets and fixings - £30
Paint, skirting boards and sockets - £100
