A Derecho In 2019 With Insane 70mph Straight Line Winds Sweeps Through Paducah, KY
In this video a massive severe squall line known as a Derecho that approached Paducah, KY on a summer day in June of 2019. The multi-cluster line of thunderstorms contained multiple areas of rotating supercells embedded within the squall. Being somewhat a rookie at the time my friend and I placed ourselves directly under an area of rotation so that when the storm hit us, it hit us extremely hard and the fact that we were at the apex of a bow echo on radar only made situation more intense, terrifying, and dangerous. It is very hard to see tornadoes within squall lines because they are shrouded in rain and often do not condense as well as other twisters spawned from rouge supercells. It was especially terrifying to me because a few months prior I was injured in a twister that traveled through Paducah. I walked outside my job to greet a tornado heading right towards me a block away. As I stared at the vortex in amazement, a giant 4ft × 4ft piece of debris fell from the sky and squarely nailed me in the back of my head. I learned the hard way about "outer rotation" that day. The debris singled me out in a group of 5 people. However, if it wasn't for that injury, I never would have known about something else in my brain that the doc saw during an MRI while at the emergency room. I guess the tornado kind of gave me a heads up. I am hoping it was my brother looking out for me, trying to warn me. I really miss him. He was a brave soldier that always put others above himself. I want to be just like him. Ever since that day I have been in love with severe weather. Now I do my part in the warning process and give others a heads up too...a second chance to beat fate by reporting ground truth to the NWS. I have been spreading awareness of the importance of being prepared for the next storm before it gets here. Many meteorologists say its a weather pattern. I believe its a weather change. Not a popular view but I have the scars on my head to prove that this area has seen an uptick in the frequency and intensity of severe weather in the past decade. Many people here have become complacent because our risk hasn't been as high in the past as it is now. They hear the sirens but do not react as they should. I want to reduce the loss of life in the upcoming severe weather events. I want to avoid another event like nearby Mayfield, KY only 20 minutes to the south. There are only so many bullets we can dodge here in Paducah. I want us to be ready so we can survive the storm. This is the story of #NewTornadoAlley, it is to be continued.....How this story will be told is up to us and how ready we are for these changes in weather in the future.
