Meet the young hijabi rapper going viral in India by breaking stereotypes
Sania Mistri is a 15-year-old girl from the Govandi slum area in Mumbai, India and she's been taking the country by storm as a viral rapper, breaking many stereotypes about a young hijabi girl.
She is studying in Class 11 and has been rapping for the last three years. Her father is a rickshaw driver and her mother works at several places to make ends meet. Her videos have been going viral and the teenager is all too determined to make a mark for herself. Mistri started singing when she was just eight years old and then took to rapping at the age of 13.
She began turning her thoughts into poetry after her friends introduced her to rapping. They also help her shoot and record the songs. Saniya has around 10,000 subscribers on YouTube now. Her songs - which express frustration and anger at systemic inequalities and poverty - have won her praise and admiration.
She credits her mother was her greatest inspiration.
