Firefighters tackle blaze inside Chernobyl Exclusion Zone
Firefighters in Ukraine were today (May 5) tackling a fire inside the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES) released a video and said they has sent 33 firefighters to tackle the grass fire near the Dytyatky checkpoint.
The Exclusion Zone covers an area of approximately 2,600 km2 immediately surrounding the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant where radioactive contamination is highest.
The head of the United Nations’ atomic watchdog said recently that Russia’s takeover of the Chernobyl site in February was “very, very dangerous” and raised radiation levels but those have now returned to normal.
