Superyacht Gitana seen 'levitating' due to atmospheric effects off Kent, UK coast
Super yacht Gitana anchored off Leigh on Sea, Essex this morning (May 29) appeared to levitate when viewed from several miles away at Sheerness in Kent on the other side of the Thames Estuary.
Due to atmospheric 'tricks of the light' over long distances - the superyacht appeared to be (a) levitating above the sea, (b) distorted in image and (c) partially reflected.
Atmospheric distortion like this is generally known as a mirage - the word comes from the French 'mirer', from the Latin mirari - meaning "to look at, to wonder at".
The footage was captured at 9.30am local time in the morning.
