As Brits rush for a summer holiday this weekend, a doctor has revealed why you should avoid economy seats and flying too much - claiming it can ruin your sex drive.

The warning comes from Dr Florence Comite from Brooklyn, US, who trained at the Ivy League college Yale Medical School and recommends that people treat their flying habits with care – or potentially see their sex lives suffer.

In a video, Dr Comite explains the link between anxiety, claustrophobia and worries around lack of space and how this can drive down someone's libido – especially if they're sitting in cramped economy seats.

"Getting on a plane in anticipation lowers your sex drive because it's anxiety-provoking, we don't know what's going to happen and it's a tight space," Dr Florence Comite, who is the founder of Groq Health, told Jam Press.

"It drives your flight-and-fight mechanism.

"So hormones that go up in the brain like norepinephrine and epinephrine will lower testosterone and that will immediately have an effect on libido and even sexual function."

Dr Comite, who lives in New York with husband Marc, their three sons, one daughter and rescue dog, Olive, believes business class – or even first class, if you have the cash to spend – might be a better option.

She added: "When you can travel in a more spacious place, when you can get a drink before the plane takes off, going into business class will totally improve it over coach [economy].

"It will relax your mind, you will be more comfortable, therefore you're not going to take a hard hit to your brain.

"Testosterone really is the weakest link; once we're overwhelmed, once we don't have enough sleep, jet lag, that is all going to affect the way we think.

"Business class, first class, will make it better."

Dr Comite also states that to prevent a low libido, if travelling frequently, make sure you anticipate and plan for the trip in advance.

Some tips include making sure all urgent jobs are done and you've gotten enough sleep – another reason to avoid cheap 6am flights where you have to be at the airport at 4am to check in.

Dr Comite added: "Also, meditating turns off the genes that lead to increases in the hormones, by decreasing some you are keeping testosterone where you should be.

"And it's a great way to make you travel better and feel better."

If you travel frequently, she also recommends getting between six to eight hours sleep per night, but no less than four.
