"I am an A&E doctor - these are the five things I'll never do"
An A&E doctor has revealed the five things he would never do - including riding a motorbike and eating leftover food that's been out too long.
Arthur Joustra, 25, started working as an A&E doctor at Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham in June, 2022 and has seen his fair share of illness and injuries.
Arthur has fixed injuries people have sustained while cycling without a helmet or while using power tools without eye protection.
He has shared his list of activities he'd avoid at all costs - to prevent having to see a doctor if things went wrong.
His list includes not going abroad for surgery, avoiding climbing in inappropriate footwear and steering clear of drugs.
Arthur, from Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, said: "I'd say I've seen a lot more that what I was expecting, every day is different and that is why I love the job so much."
"Don't do drugs. "
"The amount of things I've seen with arrythmias, heart attacks and death. "
"There's just awful side effects to them. There is only one way to be safe and that is to avoid doing them."
Arthur often sees injuries people have sustained from cycling or motorbiking.
He said: "Cycling can be dangerous so taking precautions is essential."
"You only need to see a few smashed up helmets that have protected the skull underneath to understand just how life-saving they can be."
"When it comes to motorbikes, It's important to wear the appropriate equipment, including helmet, full body leathers and padding."
"In a competition between you and the ground - the ground will win."
"I would never go on a motorbike with out any safety equipment and also feet on the dashboard are something I wouldn't do as well." "
Arthur said he has come across a few people in A&E who thought it would be a good idea to go hiking without appropriate footwear and ended up with a sprained ankle.
He said: "I am not talking about walking your dog in the park - I am talking about hikes."
"We have all been up Snowdon, fairly easy walk but you have to have appropriate footwear."
"We have all seen that guy walking around in flip flops and he is begging for an ankle fracture."
"Flip flops, sandals and even trainers on tougher climbs - it leads to twisted and broken ankles; one of the leading causes of mountain rescue being called out."
Arthur has also warned people against eating leftover food that has been left out.
He said: "A general rule of thumb is don't eat anything that's been out for more than a few hours."
"Just because it's been thoroughly reheated the toxins the bacteria produce can still make you unwell."
"I am talking about takeaways that you get at 2am and you leave on the side for the morning."
"The amount of people who come in with E. coli infections and salmonella is horrible."
"If it has been out the fridge for more than an hour - put it in the bin."
Arthur has also warned people of the dangers of flying to a foreign country for surgery.
He said: "A lot of people do go away to have a tummy tuck or a boob job abroad."
"There are some hospitals where this will be fine as they will have fully trained professionals."
"However, there is a lot - particularly if it is cheaper than going privately in the UK - where you are not getting the appropriate aftercare."
"Sometimes I have had patients who have been on the plane the same day as their procedure."
"In general if it seems too good to be true it probably is."
Five things Arthur would avoid as an A&E doctor -
Going abroad for surgery
Climbing with inappropriate footwear
Motorbiking
Drugs
Eating leftover food that has been out too long
