The optical illusion of a ship appearing to 'float in the sky' was seen off the Kent, UK coast this morning (July 8).

On a warm. sunny and calm morning, two ships were seen to be suspended in the sky off the coast of Sheerness.

The optical illusion can be caused by either what's called a 'false horizon mirage', whereby variations in wind strength cause one section of water to be calm, whilst another section has ripples or by a Fata Morgana mirage.
