An innovative wind-assisted ship was spotted off the Kent coast, UK this afternoon (July 12).

Vessel Annika Braren has been fitted with a rotor column on its bow as part of the Wind Assisted Ship Propulsion (WASP) Project funded by the European Regional Development Fund and was spotted passing Sheerness.

As part of the project five commercial ships were retrofitted with wind-assist systems of varying designs.

After three and a half years the project determined such systems resulted in around 10% fuel savings.
