This is the scary moment a delivery rider ran for his life after an electric meter behind him exploded during a thunderstorm in Thailand.

The food courier was sheltering next to the building while waiting for the rain to pass when the electric meter burst into flame and showered him with hot sparks in Nonthaburi on August 28.

Both the rider and a pickup truck parked nearby fled the scene, with the device still emitting smoke.

Building owner Beer Caming said: 'Nobody lives in that building. We only store things inside it.

'The explosion happened after heavy rain. Luckily, nobody was injured.'

Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia, such as Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines, are in the middle of their tropical monsoon rainy season, which lasts from May or June until November.

Soaring temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunder, lightning, rain and flash floods which cause rivers to flow faster and become dangerous.
