Incredible underwater view of an osprey diving for fish at speeds of up to 77mph
A photographer has been patiently waiting for 10 years to capture the bizarre underwater view of an osprey as it dives to catch a fish.
Photographers regularly capture the majestic birds as they plummet towards the water at speeds of up to 77mph, but it is incredibly rare to see what the bird looks like after it has been submerged.
Soaking wet, and with talons outstretched, the bedraggled bird cuts an unusual and forbidding figure as it dives towards the prey, in the photographs captured at Lake Majcz in the Masuria region of North-eastern Poland.
“I love how the osprey digs into the water, disappears under the water for a moment and in a moment soars with the fish in its claws. Such scenes I will remember all my life," said retired forester Krzysztof Stasiaczek, 66, who captured the jaw-dropping footage
“I always wanted to take a picture of an osprey underwater. For several years I tried different methods this year finally succeeded.”
The visuals show a male osprey who is catching fish for its mate, and the pair’s chicks.
The female rarely hunts and stays back at the nest to tend to the young on keep eggs warm.
Guarding the nest is important, as the chicks are at risk from predators including eagles and hawks.
Krzysztof added: “I have been observing and photographing the ospreys for over 10 years I say 'my ospreys' I am emotionally connected with them and I would not like anything bad to happen to them.”
