Beautifying the Mae Kha Canal in Chiang Mai, Thailand is a Major Project
The Mae Kha Klong (Canal) runs for 11 kilometres through Chiang Mai and is known as the stinking canal. That's all changing as the local government initiates a program to deal with wastewater management and restoration of the banks, creating a pleasant environment. The first phase deals with 2 kms at a cost of 22.5 million Thai Baht (GBP 520,000) funded by central government, the second phase of 2 kms has a budget of 20 million Baht. A further 75 million THB has been requested to complete the restoration. HM the King is involved in progressing the project.
The area was further enhanced by floating lanterns as the major festival of water and light known as Loi Krathong approaches on 8 November.
For years, the canal has had sludge removed. Opening dredging shots were filmed on 6 November 2020.
