Strong Myanmar 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake affects Thailand

At 13.20 on March 28 an earthquake of 7.7 magnitude occured in northern Myanmar (Burma) near Mandalay, causing extensive damage. The effects were felt in Chiang Mai,Thailand, where major hotels evacuated staff and patrons for several hours while engineers assessed damage. Shopping malls and a hospital were also evacuated.
There were no reports of serious damage or injuries in Chiang Mai.
The Thai prime minister declared Bangkok a disaster area.
