A protester was shot during a protest in Plaza San Martín in Lima, Peru against the impeachment of former President Pedro Castillo on Monday (December 12).

Demonstrators expanded protests in several regions calling for new elections and the release of Castillo, despite a pledge to hold early elections by new President Dina Boluarte.

In the shocking eyewitness video, which some viewers may find distressing, a shot is heard and a demonstrator falls to the ground and lies apparently unconscious. In the video, the filmer can be heard saying: "Oh sh**! The guy has just been hit!"

Protesters drag the man away while the police continue to throw smoke bombs.

The filmer told Newsflare: "There was a lot of blood. Protesters dragged him about 30 metres up the road and this left a long trail of blood. In the street later on there was a huge amount of blood pooled where he had been dragged too".

According to the filmer, an ambulance arrived at the scene and took the man away.

"Protesters told me he had died and shared a photo of his dead body with me,” he said. "There was a vigil at the location with candles and some crying people around some of the blood.”

Peru has recently been witnessing a wave of demonstrations over the impeachment of Castillo. Protesters are calling for new elections and the release of Castillo, despite a pledge to hold early elections by new President Dina Boluarte.

According to the BBC, at least seven people have died in clashes with the security forces since protests erupted over the impeachment of Castillo on December 7.
