Approximately 2,000 suspected gang members have been moved to
El Salvador's new mega terrorism prison. The facility has recently been inaugurated by the President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele.

The Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (CECOT), which translates into English as Terrorism Confinement Centre is the largest detention facility in Latin America. Located in Tecoluca, San Vicente, it has an operational capacity of 40,000 inmates.

The video shows the massive group of inmates - tattooed and barefoot - being led and transported to the facility in shackles.

Gang members will be transferred to this prison when captured under the exception regime and the Territorial Control Plan (PCT).

With the declaration and extension of the state of exception, a mechanism used by the government to fight terrorism, more than 60,000 people have been imprisoned since April 2022. The gang crackdown has been widely criticised by human rights groups claiming that the state of emergency has been used to jail hundreds with no connection to organised crime.
