The body of a missing Romanian tourist who disappeared two months ago on a Thai diving trip while trying to repair a boat has been found.

Sebastian Emil Somesan, 46, was with friends visiting the island of Koh Kaew Nok south of Phuket on January 8 when the anchor of Somesan's speedboat snagged on rocks underwater.

The experienced diver plunged to a depth of around 30 metres to release the anchor but never resurfaced.

Somesan's friend Alexandru Florin Miron, 47, who was also on the boat, phoned his wife Nichkamol Theparak, 42, to call for lifeguards.

A search was launched involving marine police, divers, volunteers, and local officials, but they failed to find the Romanian national.

A corpse believed to be Somesan's body was found by fishermen floating face-down and without limbs some 11 nautical miles from Koh Kaew Phitsadan at 11:33 AM on March 10.

The body was carried ashore by marine police and local officials. They contacted Somesan's wife, Sangrawee Sringa, 42, who tentatively confirmed his identity, saying he was wearing the same outfit when he disappeared.

Teerapong Taodang, deputy mayor of Rawai Municipality, said the corpse may have been snagged in rocks, preventing it from resurfacing.

He said: 'The people who were on the boat with Sebastian confirmed that the corpse seemed to be his. The wet suit matched what he was wearing that day but his body is not possible to identify.'

Somesan's remains were taken to the Vachira Phuket Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Phuket Forensic Police will also perform a DNA test on his son to confirm the corpse's identity.
