On March 11, 2023, Mount Merapi erupted in Yogyakarta and Central Java, and a local resident in Magelang, Ferry Dwi, managed to capture the eruption on video. The volcano, which is one of Indonesia's most active, erupted around 12 p.m local time (0500 GMT), and a lava flow of 1.5 km was observed.

Local authorities have warned residents in the nearby community to stay out of the danger zones, which range between three to seven kilometers radius from the crater. This warning was issued as a safety measure to protect the residents from the dangers of the volcano's eruption.

Mount Merapi is one of Indonesia's most dangerous volcanoes and was already on the country's second-highest alert level before the recent eruption. This is due to its history of frequent and deadly eruptions, with the most recent eruption occurring in 2018, killing more than 100 people.
