This is the moment a group of scientists got trapped near a volcano in Russia's far east after a rock fell causing huge ash clouds on April 11.

The group of six was at the Bezymianny volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula as part of an expedition aimed at studying the volcano's activity, as well as taking aerial photographs.

This dramatic video, which was filmed by Petr Krinkin, shows the moment the enormous ash cloud begins to cover the sky. The team can be seen running to find shelter. Scientists take cover underneath special vehicles that look similar to snowmobiles.

Bezymianny had been actively erupting since the end of March, with lava flowing from its crater and ash clouds billowing into the air. The edges of the crater were prone to collapse. Despite these warning signs, the group departed from the Apakhonchich base station on April 7 to reach Ambon Rock, which was relatively close to the volcano. They planned to collect samples and install gas analyzers and mobile stations.

The scientists were not able to move from their location due to the heavy ash fall and the danger of new rockslides. They managed to establish communication with the rescue team. Rescuers only managed to reach them the day after due to harsh weather conditions.

The six scientists were safely evacuated and reported minor injuries.
