Crisis in Sudan: army and paramilitary forces clash for control
Sudan is in the midst of a crisis as the army and the paramilitary force, Rapid Support Forces (RSF), battle for control of key areas in the country. The fighting has resulted in the deaths of over 50 civilians and has left many more injured.
The conflict is centered around the presidential palace, state TV, international airports, and army headquarters. The generals who have been running Sudan since a coup in October 2021 are also involved in the power struggle. The clip filmed by @baraka_swift shows a military tanker making its way through Jabra One Street, Khartoum, Sudan on 17th April, 2023.
The fighting is between army units loyal to the de facto leader, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the RSF, commanded by Sudan's deputy leader, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti. Hemedti has declared that his troops will keep fighting until all army bases are captured.
The situation in Sudan has caused international concern, with the United Nations and other global organizations calling for an end to the violence and a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The African Union has also expressed its concern and has urged both sides to negotiate.
In response to the conflict, Sudan's armed forces have ruled out negotiations "until the dissolution of the paramilitary RSF." This has further escalated tensions and made a peaceful resolution more challenging. Credit to: @baraka_swift
