Spain welcomed spring recently with this unusual Celtic tradition.

Footage captured on May 6 in Velilla del Río Carrión in Castile and Leon province showed locals arrive back at the village with recently felled pine tree on the back of a truck.

Villagers then work together to plant the giant maypole in the middle of a field.

With the considerable task completed, the fun begins with locals taking turns to try to shimmy up the massive tree to win a leg of cured ham.

These days competitors wear safety harnesses to avoid injury although for generations young men risked everything to prove their bravery at the festical known as the "Pinada del Mayo".

This ancient tradition dates back to Celtic times, when the arrival of spring was celebrated with wild abandon.


It is the first Saturday in May, early in the morning the youngsters in this northern Spanish mountain village venture out into the deep forest to seek out a tall pine tree.
With their axes at the ready, they cut down the towering pine, its branches falling away until only a small treetop remains. After decorating it with colorful ribbons they set off on a journey to the town.

As they approach the village, a crowd of residents and visitors awaits, eager to join the festivities.
Together, they collaborate to raise the mighty pine tree and plant it in a nearby field.
It's a difficult task that requires coordination and teamwork, but they work together seamlessly, turning the effort into a great communal party.

Before the night falls, the town's young people will attempt to climb the tree to the top. It's a daring feat that requires strength, agility, and a fearless spirit. And the prize? None other than a succulent ham!

While safety harnesses are now worn by climbers, it wasn't always the case.
