STORYLINE:

On June 6, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited a state forestry area in Bayannur to learn about progress in the Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program (TSFP).

Xi stressed the need to prevent and control desertification for the survival and development of humanity. He warned of regression risks at the slightest lapse of attention as if pushing a boulder uphill.

Xi said major ecological projects like the TSFP could only be accomplished under the leadership of the CPC.

Xi said that given the fragile ecological conditions of northeast China, north China, and northwest China, tackling desertification has become a long-term task of historic importance, and sustained efforts must be made in this regard to conserve well what our ancestors have left us and not to do a disservice to our future generations when it comes to ecology.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): DU WENHUA, Xinhua forest farm in Linhe District, Bayannur City
"President Xi asked about the characteristics of this tree, and I made an introduction. Hedysarum mongolicum is a psammophyte, which could stabilize sand dunes against wind erosion. It has soft branches and well-developed roots, with high drought tolerance. President Xi cares much about the TSFP, stabilizing sand dunes against wind erosion, and afforestation."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): ZHAO JUNLING, Party secretary of Linhe District
"President Xi learned about the history and the management of the forest farm, as well as the characteristics of various trees. He paid special attention to ecology and cares so much about the flora.
We must follow President Xi's important instructions during his visit to the forest farm, carefully implement President Xi Jinping's thought on ecological civilization, and adopt a holistic approach to improving the ecosystems by promoting the integrated conservation and restoration of mountains, rivers, forests, farmlands, lakes, grass and sand.
We'll take the prevention of desert encroachment and sand control as a task of historical significance, constantly consolidate and expand the achievements, and do a better job in forestry."

SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): WANG ZHAOSHENG, Chief of forestry and grassland bureau of Inner Mongolia
"President Xi knows well the conditions in Inner Mongolia and has personally visited many places. In the future, we must follow President Xi's instructions, push ahead with various ecological projects in a scientific way, and make consistent and long-term efforts to build an unbreakable ecological security barrier in the north of our country."
