Police investigation launched after boy killed by BMW driver as he cycled across major Birmingham road

A young cyclist has unfortunately died following a collision on in Yardley, Birmingham on Thursday evening.

West Midlands Ambulance Service were called to Coventry Road, Yardley in Birmingham at 6.17pm to a road traffic collision involving a car and a cyclist.

Three ambulances, two paramedic officers, a MERIT trauma doctor and critical care paramedic and the West Midlands CARE Team attended the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “Upon arrival, ambulance staff found a boy who was the cyclist. He was assessed and had sustained life-threatening injuries.

Ambulance staff administered advanced life support to him but unfortunately, despite their best efforts, nothing more could be done to save him and he was confirmed deceased at the scene.”

“A man who was a pedestrian, who was involved in a separate collision involving a pedestrian and a car nearby to the scene was assessed by ambulance staff and had sustained minor injuries.

He received treatment from ambulance staff before being conveyed to Heartlands Hospital for further assessment.”

“No further patients required treatment.”

West Midlands Police closed the road for several hours as specialist Collision Investigation officers examined the crash scene for clues as to how it happened.

Mark Roberts, a witness said on Twitter: "Witnessed a RTI (road traffic incident) on Coventry road heading towards the airport. "Car was undertaking and cut across two lanes and hit a cyclist."
