Man Hospitalised after Grade II Listed Terracotta Building Fire in Birmingham

West Midlands Fire Service have mobilised over 50 firefighters to one of the city's most iconic land mark buildings after a fire broke out on Friday morning.

The building, located close to the city's Jewellery Quarter, was first constructed in 1896 for H B Sale and Co. it was designed by William Doubleday and Shaw, architects, built on a narrow triangular site in dark red brick.

The building consists of four storeys dressed in terracotta.

One man was taken to hospital after receiving 'minor injuries' West Midlands

Ambulance Service said: ‘We received a call from fire colleagues at 7.50am about a building fire on Constitution Hill in Birmingham. ‘An ambulance, two paramedic officers, a BASICS (British Association For Immediate Care) emergency doctor and the Trust’s Hazardous Area Response Team were sent to the scene.

‘One patient, a man, was treated for minor injuries before being conveyed to Midlands Metropolitan University Hospital.’

Firefighters could be seen on a hydraulic platform inspecting the building as smoke still whipped from above.

There was also a rest area below the building where firefighters wearing breathing apparatus could standby in case they are needed to go inside once again.

A statement from West Midlands Fire Service said: ‘Shortly before 7.30am on Friday (16 January), we responded to Constitution Hill in the Hockley area of Birmingham.

‘Currently, there are ten fire engines, two 4×4 brigade response vehicles and a hydraulic aerial platform at the scene.

The first crew reached the incident within four minutes of being mobilised.

‘This is a severe fire on the fourth floor of a five-storey building.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are tackling the fire.

‘Due to our presence in the area, there is considerable disruption.

Constitution Hill and Summer Lane are closed – please avoid the area and find alternative travel routes.

‘A multi-agency briefing between WMFS, Police and Ambulance colleagues, Cadent and Severn Trent Water has taken place at the scene.

‘Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are continuing their work to extinguish this fire.

‘Police colleagues are supporting with traffic management.’
