New octopus species found at depths of almost 10,000 feet in Costa Rica
A new species of octopus has been discovered at near depths of 10,000 feet in Costa Rica.
The secret nursery of these octopuses was found nearly 10,000 feet below the Atlantic Ocean.
Video footage recorded by a deep-sea submersible shows the young molluscs being nursed on rocks on the ocean bed. The mothers protect their young by clinging onto their eggs with their tentacles and having their suckers facing outward. A male octopus is seen guarding the brood and displaying warning signals.
The expedition by scientists from the Schmidt Ocean Institute lasted for three weeks in June. They witnessed the hatching of the octopus brood and identified it as a potentially new species of Muusoctopus.
