This is the bizarre moment Matty Healy from pop group The 1975 kissed his male bandmate on stage - with gay rights groups blasting the stunt for setting back their progress in Islamic-ruled Malaysia.

The singer has been accused of having a 'white-saviour complex' and putting LGBT people in danger of retaliation attacks following his cringeworthy expletive-laden drunk rant at the show in Kuala Lumpur on July 22.

Dhia Rezki Rohaizad, the deputy president of gay rights advocacy group Jejaka, said the 'selfish' stunt had sparked an angry backlash against homosexuals from members of the public.

The campaigner said: 'We had to go into damage control following Healy's actions to break the laws he earlier said he would adhere to. Now a lot of people are angry at the gay community because of Healy.

'We seem to be losing support from these neutrals who were neither for nor against us before this, all because we've been put under an unwanted microscope.'

S Thilaga of the transgender advocacy group Justice for Sisters said the singer's stunt had 'heightened panic' within the LGBT community, who are already heavily traumatised by recent events'

She added: 'We're currently in an election period and the community is often used as a punching bag or scapegoat and we generally expect higher anti-LGBT sentiments during elections. This will further isolate the young, closeted individuals who're afraid to express themselves.'

Drag queen Carmen Rose told the BBC that doing the speech while 'intoxicated was uncalled for'.

He said: 'Based on the video, the way he delivered it was very performative. It's giving a ‘white-saviour complex' and he wasn't doing it for our community.

'If he was doing it for our community, he would know the consequences we would have to go through. I don't think he cares about us, but himself. I get the message he's trying to send but it wasn't a very good message.'

The British singer was accused of ignorantly trying to force his liberal worldview on countries where the development of equal rights for people of different sexual orientations is a more delicate and nuanced issue.

It comes after Healy - the son of actors Denise Welsch and Tim Healy - and American pop singer Swift had a whirlwind romance earlier this year before suddenly breaking up.

'She had fun with him, but it was always casual,' a friend said.
