STORYLINE:

Cambodia inaugurated the third ring road encircling parts of the capital Phnom Penh on Thursday.

The Chinese-funded ring road, with two lanes for traffic in each direction, stretches from the southwestern part of Phnom Penh to Kandal province in the east of the capital.

Local residents are delighted to see the completion of the road, saying that it would facilitate their travel and transport of goods.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Khmer): YAY ART, Farmer in Kandal province
"Previously, it was difficult to travel to the city because of traffic jams and many container trucks. This road helps reduce traffic congestion. It will give a boost to our economy and improve the transport of goods. I would like to thank China for funding the construction of roads and bridges for the Cambodian people and our younger generations."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Khmer): LIM SORIYA, Vegetable vendor in Kandal province
"I have traveled on the road and felt very happy. I am proud to see such a beautiful road. Previously, it was difficult to travel, now we have got this new road. We are happy because it is easy to travel. This big road is good, and it makes the transport of goods easier and faster than before."

SOUNDBITE 3 (Khmer): SAING SOKCHEA, Resident along the third ring road
"China is the best partner of Cambodia, helping us develop bridges, roads, and other infrastructure."

The 53-km ring road, along with two river bridges and two flyovers, was constructed by the Shanghai Construction Group in a period of 52 months under concessional loan from the Export-Import Bank of China.
